12. BAUSENBERG: BREACHED VOLCANO

A cinder cone formed during the activities of the Bausenberg volcano, which lasted only a few weeks. Inside, lava bubbled up, cutting a breach through the weakest area in the north of the cone wall and then flowing out as a lava flow. This gave the volcanic structure its typical horseshoe shape.

To this day, Bausenberg is the best-preserved horseshoe crater in the Eifel! There is a wide variety of different types of biotope around the crater and its wall. Niederzissen's local mountain is home to well over 500 plant species and more than 5,000 different animal species, all of which are protected.

Discover this natural landscape on a beautiful walk along the crater rim.
