35. WALLENBORN: COLD WATER GEYSER

The “Wallender Born” geyser was created by chance during earthworks in 1933. While drilling a well to exploit the underground carbon dioxide deposits, the workers came across a cavity filled with gas. Since then, the gas has been flowing to the surface under high pressure, entraining water.

This causes the geyser to erupt every half hour. After little attention had been paid to the geyser over the decades, it was decided a few years ago to completely redesign the facility. The enclosure of the geyser with concrete shaft rings from the 1970s was removed and the decision was made to unleash the force of nature unhindered.
