5. RAUSCHERMÜHLE INFORMATION CENTER

The Volcano Park Information Center between the two towns of Plaidt and Saffig is your first port of call for travel planning, but also for essential information about Eifel volcanism and 7,000 years of rock quarrying in the region. The Volcano Park Information Center offers everything you need for a perfect start into the world of the Eifel volcanoes.

In the beginning there was fire: large illuminated pictures and impressive film material bring the hot history of the formation of the Eastern Eifel back to life. Original exhibits such as a basalt bomb show the entire range of volcanic rocks. In the “Archaeology & History of Technology” exhibition, visitors can immerse themselves in the history of basalt and tuff quarrying in the truest sense of the word. A 3D floor image allows them to take a visual look into the tunnels of the quarries. From Roman times through the Middle Ages to modern times, everything revolves around the valuable volcanic raw materials. Illuminated pictures and millstones encourage visitors to join in while an ancient Roman sleeps next door.

Volcanic rocks can be experienced with all the senses in the stone adventure garden directly behind the Volcano Park Information Center. Listen to a humming stone, feel the incredible weight of a basalt bomb and make music yourself on a large stone xylophone. Plan about 1.5 to 2 hours for your visit to the Plaidt/Saffig Volcano Park Information Center.
