7. WINGERTSBERG: GEOLOGICAL GEM!

The Wingertsbergwand near Mendig is a world-famous geological window into the past, which has been used by volcanologists from all over the world for research and teaching for years. The impressive tephra deposits, up to 40 meters high, are the result of the most powerful volcanic eruption in recent geological history in Central Europe. We are talking about the Laacher See volcano, which changed large parts of the volcanic East Eifel region forever around 13,000 years ago.

The eruption of the Laacher See volcano, a gray volcano with enormous destructive power, is explained on 20 illustrated display boards on the Wingertsbergwand. The current state of scientific research is documented. But the Wingertsbergwand is not just for volcano researchers and interested laypeople. Nature lovers will also get their money's worth: an eagle owl has been living there for some time. Be sure to combine your visit to the Wingertsbergwand, for which you should plan approx. 45 minutes, with a visit to the Lava Dome in Mendig.
